Choose Healthier Coach Tip: Diet Pills?

A: There are so many weight-loss pills available online, at your local drugstore, supermarket, and even at health food stores. Most haven’t been proven effective, and some are downright dangerous. Dietary supplements and weight-loss aids aren’t subject to the same rigorous standards are prescription drugs. Thus, they can be sold with limited proof of effectiveness or safety. Once a product is on the market, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can take action to ban or recall dangerous products. The FDA has already banned the sale of supplements containing ephedra and other ephedrine-like ingredients. Of course, it takes time for the FDA to research a supplement that’s on the market. So, just because it’s on the shelves where you shop does not mean it’s healthy or safe! It’s important to do your homework, and don’t be afraid to ask your doctor or pharmacist about any weight-loss aid you’re considering using! Also be sure to visit the FDA website for alerts about safety concerns and product recalls.
