Mark Polner, Trophy Club TX
"Both my wife and I are down almost 30 pounds each...I do the cooking. I prep breakfast and lunch for her, usually running around 12-13 points total [for Weight Watchers], and I cook healthy recipes. We don't eat out nearly as much. I cook with fresh herbs and vegetables, and I am loving it. We actually have had better and more exotic home-cooked meals. That is really exciting for us. Joining the IT'S TIME TEXAS Community Challenge inspired us to stay on track and post pictures. We were feeling really proud because we were sticking to it. I believe that helped to inspire us to stick with it. Even a simple walk and posting a picture of it was rewarding. This helped keep us on track. Even though the Challenge has ended, we plan on staying on track because the results were life changing. I quit smoking, as well. We have had to buy new clothes and that is a good feeling. My XXL shirts are too big and my pants wouldn't stay up. It also helped us feel more like a part of our community. We were more involved with our neighbors. I was actually recognized by someone for some of my goofy selfies eating healthy. IT'S TIME TEXAS Community Challenge is a great concept for those looking to make a change. Sometimes being a part of something bigger can light that fire you've been looking for. It almost holds you accountable and pushes you to succeed." -
Marc Berron, Austin ISD Warehouse, Austin TX
"In 2014, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Being only 25 years old, I was living a dangerous lifestyle. From eating fried foods to drinking alcoholic beverages on the weekends, food took over my life. Then in December 2014, I went into work not feeling too well, so I had to have my girlfriend take me to the doctor's office. After getting blood work done, that's when the doctors diagnosed me with Type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, etc. After three months of proper eating habits and daily exercise, I was considered pre-diabetic. Then in the next three months, I had completely reversed my diagnosis. Still to this day, I use exercise and proper eating habits to keep all of the weight off. During my weight loss journey, my girlfriend also joined [the Community Challenge] and now has lost a total of 70 pounds. Coworkers have also joined the movement and have lost many pounds as well. Then, as of today March 24th, my girlfriend who has been at 200 pounds now weighs in at 130 and is a certified personal trainer. Not only did I change my life but also impacted people around me. Now, my girlfriend is also working to help save other people from experiencing what we've been through. IT'S TIME for Texans to trust the process and make the rest of your life the best of your life!" -
Lindsey Barak, Dorie Miller Intermediate School Nurse, Ennis TX
"I encouraged our school and community to participate in the Community Challenge. This was the first year we have participated, and we had a great time! One of the best activities we did was a campus vs. campus volleyball tournament. Our two intermediate schools formed teams and had practice for a few months, then we had a tournament. The losers had to buy a healthy lunch for the winning team. It was so much fun that the staff want to continue playing." -
Kevin Taylor, Senior Pastor, Harvest of Praise Ministry, Glenn Heights TX
"After attending one of Glenn Heights’ Chamber of Commerce meetings, I felt that it would be a great opportunity for Harvest of Praise Ministry to partner with the City of Glenn Heights and accept the IT'S TIME TEXAS Community Challenge. During the meeting, James Gaston presented a persuasive presentation on how it would be beneficial for the City of Glenn Heights, as well as its local businesses, churches, and communities to participate in the Challenge. As Senior Pastor, I am not only concerned with the spiritual needs of my parishioners but their physical needs as well. It is my belief that if parishioners feel better physically, then they will feel motivated to be more faithful in their church attendance; thus giving them an even greater worship experience...Participating in the IT'S TIME TEXAS Community Challenge is a great opportunity to promote healthy living to the members of Harvest of Praise Ministry while accomplishing our spiritual goals. In addition, participation in the Challenge provides the opportunity for Harvest of Praise Ministry to get involved with the City of Glenn Heights and support Glenn Heights in any way we can. We are glad to be a part of the Challenge and are looking forward to future challenges. IT'S TIME for Texas, churches, and communities to partner together to make healthy living and worshiping God a part of our daily living." -
Helen Song, Austin TX
"I participated [in the Community Challenge] last year and found out about it through the newsletter from Ballet Austin. This is my second year to participate! I've been going through a life change and have been regularly exercising and swapping out food for healthier meals and snacks. Austin was so close to winning last year, and with Austin's reputation as a fit and growing community, I feel like we have more to prove than other communities! IT'S TIME for us to stop putting off things until tomorrow. Start TODAY!" -
Tiffany Nimphius, Trophy Club TX
"This is Trophy Club's first year to participate in the Community Challenge. It was brought to us by an individual who had heard about it from another community who had participated. We were very excited to bring it to our community. It is a perfect fit to promote our culture of safety, healthy, patriotism and involvement. On a personal level, I keep the town encouraged and motivated by making myself available to answer questions, join people in a workout, and talk about how fun and easy the Community Challenge is. I believe this challenge is intended to expose people to a fun way of finding out how easy a healthy lifestyle can be. Sometimes, people want a friendly, non-confrontational way of making healthy choices. I share some sort of reminder on social media every day to make it fun. Whether that is recreating a silly selfie with a fruit or veggie, holding them accountable to a certain number of healthy selfies, drinking water, or asking them to hang out with us at a community workout. When people see that they are supported by an entire community, they are more inclined to participate in the challenge. If they can participate for a few weeks, we can then work on them turning the ways to earn points into every day habits. Trophy Club, as a whole, has found its Community Challenge cheerleaders. It was not something we initially set out to do. It happened very organically. Being that this is our first year to participate, we did not know what to expect or how to initially roll out the Challenge. We put together the best game plan we could think of at the time. I feel that Trophy Club has done an amazing job learning new ways to keep people motivated and engaged. We reached out to several of our local businesses that specialize in fitness and asked if they would be willing to open group classes to all members of our community, regardless of whether or not they are a member of their business. They were all more than willing to participate. Other non-health related businesses have organized community walks, held healthy lunches with friends and neighbors, cooking classes in their homes, and much more. Our local Camp Gladiator trainers have agreed to volunteer their time to lead our whole community through group exercise classes. We are also providing participants with fruit and water. It is kind of like a small token of appreciation because they took time out of their day to be with us and support our efforts in the Community Challenge. As far as our elected officials go, our Mayor is, by far, the best mayor in the state of Texas. He is an active participant in the Challenge, shows up to our community workouts and does the workout. He is leading by example. And that is so great. Our Council has been incredibly supportive as well. If, I mean when, Trophy Club wins the Community Challenge, it will be a prime example of how Trophy Club can accomplish anything when we come together for a common goal. The Community Challenge is uniting our town in a positive way by coming together for the greater good of our residents. We have all made new friends and memories that will last a lifetime." -
Kelsey Heiden, New Braufels TX
"New Braunfels is stepping up to the Challenge in more ways than one! We are encouraging our residents in New Braunfels to come together to eat better, move more and prioritize health. We are promoting the website tools to track health-related activities and encouraging the healthy selfies by hosting a Fit-February healthy selfie challenge in our parks and trails. The City of New Braunfels is also hosting several free activities in support of the challenge. In addition to the City, our local utilities company (NBU) and school districts have also joined in the challenge. We kicked off our participation with the opening of a new Park – Morningside Park. This new 16-acre neighborhood park features a playground, walking trails, a children's bike path, a nature play area, gaga ball pit and restrooms. After the ceremonial ribbon cutting, we invited the nearby school and neighborhoods to join our Mayor in a walk around the park. The walked served two purposes, we were able to encourage exercise and healthy living while showing off the different amenities of the park. We had over 150 people in attendance and almost everyone joined in on the walk!" -
Viviana Santos, Austin ISD Parent Support Specialist
"I have been posting all of my physical activities, my healthy meals, and community events! We have events promoting health, wellness, and fitness, like diabetes classes for the community, fitness Fridays for our students, Zumba classes, nutrition classes, and events for our teachers. I love health and fitness and I love sharing what I've learned. I sincerely do this to promote a healthy life style and to be a role model for everyone around me. I am lucky to work with students, parents, teachers, and the community on the daily basis and I know I am making and impact in their lives. Winning the Community Challenge would be awesome because it's a way of celebrating everyone's hard work, but it is not only about the win. It's a fun way to get others involve and come together as a community. IT'S TIME for Austin ISD to commit to a healthy lifestyle!" -
Arianna Vazquez-Hernandez, Director of Communications & Public Information, PSJA ISD
"Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA) is taking part in this year’s 2017 Community Challenge in partnership with the City of Pharr. PSJA has encouraged teachers, staff and administration to take the Pledge! We have also motivated them to be active and healthy through various free activities at our PSJA Stadium including free Zumba and yoga classes from now until March 31. As a community, to win the title we are working closely with the City of Pharr to promote various healthy events including our own free classes at the PSJA Stadium and city 5K walks. The City of Pharr will be hosting a Mayor’s Community Walk on Feb. 23 and a St. Patrick’s Day 5K Run/walk on March 18, where we will be inviting our students, parents and staff to step up for the Challenge! This competition is important to us as a school district because we want to energize and motivate our PSJA family to live healthier, more active lives. We are aware of the obesity issues affecting families in the Rio Grande Valley and we want to take part in educating our students and families about the importance of being active and eating healthy. Winning this title would mean that PSJA ISD is taking the right steps to educate and help improve the lives of our families. We know that healthy students are better learners, so it is important that we help them learn what they need to do to live healthier lifestyles. IT'S TIME for our PSJA family to get fit and healthy!" -
Carrie Isaac, Dripping Springs TX
"I am a health and wellness consultant. I teach individuals how to make healthy lifestyle choices. I started a Mayor's Health and Fitness Council in my community, and I am currently leading my community in the IT'S TIME TEXAS Community Challenge! IT'S TIME for health educators to design and implement health education and intervention programs in schools, business, and places of worship!" -
Vianney Gonzalez, Austin TX
"In 2016, I was challenged by Ballet Austin to participate in the Community Challenge. I was able to reach an 18 pound weight loss goal and get my health under control. Over the course of the year, I have maintained the weight loss and am now an Ambassador for IT'S TIME TEXAS. I love to use my experience and the IT'S TIME TEXAS tools to encourage others to participate in health initiatives like the Community Challenge. As I continue my weight loss journey, I am loving participating in the 2017 Challenge and am continuing to get the word out on how even small changes can make a big impact to your health." -
Cecilia Reyes, District Nurse, Sabinal ISD
"I heard about the Community Challenge via emails and thought this would be great for the students, parents, and community of Sabinal. This is Sabinal's first year in the Challenge and I expect superb representation. Sabinal is a fantastic little town where everyone knows everyone and this small town may be tiny, but it is sure is mighty! Sabinal is such a competitive town and with recent upgrades to the downtown sidewalks, I figured this would be an opportune time for Sabinal to rally together and show that we could win the Challenge. Sabinal ISD hosted a registration assistance in the school cafeteria to help people register, and then we hosted a Zumba dance class! We must make health a priority so that anyone, no matter their weight, their age or their physical endurance, can start making healthy choices. As a community we are stronger when we all work together and have the same goal. IT'S TIME for Sabinal to step up, get moving, and make health a priority!" -
Superintendent Cavazos, Harlingen CISD
“On a personal note, I will share with you, that over the holidays I lost my older brother to the very two things that we highlight as killers as far as not staying healthy. My brother was a diabetic and he had some heart problems, and he passed away over the holidays at the age of 57, so this is very personal to me also. I want to make sure that I serve as a role model for our over 3,000 employees and 19,000 students, because it’s through being a role model and working together that we can push each other to ensure that we stay healthy.” -
Tiffany Montemayor, Corpus Christi TX
"I began by cutting way back on fast food and then watching how many extra servings of food I was eating. I didn't want to try any fad diets that have you losing 12 pounds in two weeks because I knew that I wanted to get healthy...not just lose weight. But more importantly, I wanted to STAY healthy. Once I felt like I had a decent handle on my eating habits, I decided that it was time to add some physical activity into my life and that's when I came across the IT'S TIME TEXAS Challenge that the Corpus Chiristi Mayor's Fitness Council was promoting on Facebook. So I began walking, which turned into walking/jogging. I walk/jogged my way to the finish line of a 5k in February of 2016 and I was hooked... I went from 164 lbs to 118 lbs and from a size 12 in jeans to a size 2. A comparison of my blood work and a physical with the doctor from 2015 to 2016 revealed that I had got all of my numbers in the perfect zone (they were way above where they should have been and I was overweight for my height). I use all of those things to measure my success but I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the overall feeling of being fit and healthy transferred into all other aspects of my life. I got two promotions last year, was asked to sit on the board of a local non-profit clinic, wrote my first state grant and we were awarded the funds, was appointed to the Mayor's Fitness Council, went back to school to start working on my Masters, and was selected as Corpus Christi's Top 40 Under 40. Waking up early and going for a run before work combined with putting better fuel into my body gave me the energy overall happiness to accomplish all of those things. I am the oldest of 4 children and the oldest of 11 grandchildren so I think about them in everything I do. I try my best to set a positive example and be a good role model for them whether that's being the first person in my family to go to college or the first to run a race. Knowing that they can look at me and realize that anything is possible is what motivates me. I feel amazing and am living my best life right now so that is all I want for my family. IT'S TIME for Texans to take control of their health!" -
David Galvin, Teach Healthier After School Soccer Instructor, Del Valle, TX
"Halfway through the fall, a new player got added to the roster for Del Valle Elementary. We'll call him Justin. Justin had a pretty rough time integrating into the team as a 5th grader without soccer fundamentals and poor physical conditioning. I'd see him struggling in warm ups and drills and sometimes he would walk off the field because he was being picked on by his teammates. He came to me one day and said he might leave the team because he didn't want to bring the team down, I suspect because he didn't feel like he belonged. I told him that if he didn't give up during the drills and actually tried his hardest on warm ups that his hard work would pay off. I gave him more tips on how to play defense and told him that if he really wanted to help the team, he should focus on defense. So he doubled down and started to get better and better with each week. He moved up to the starting defense for the next tournament, and by the last tournament of the year he was defensive captain and helped the team get their first trophy with a 3rd place finish! Over the course of the semester Justin lost about 10 pounds, became much more vocal and social with the team, and exceeded even my expectations for skill development. He still comes by practices every now and again to check on how the team is doing, and to offer tips to the younger players." -
Sandra Flinn, Mayor's Wellness Council Chair, Harlingen, TX
"With about 6 weeks left in the IT’S TIME TEXAS Community Challenge last year, Harlingen Mayor Boswell was challenged by the Mayor of Brownsville! Harlingen is a very supportive community and we also involved our Superintendent, Dr. Art Cavazos, who is an avid health enthusiast! We produced a video challenge to our community and school district. We promoted the challenge to our principals who immediately signed on to take the pledge. We utilized social media outlets and school district websites as well as our Mayor’s Wellness Council/Healthy Harlingen networks. The rest is history! We had over 28,000 individual activations with only 6 weeks left in the challenge and won the school district division and placed 5th in our city division. This year we plan on winning both!" -
Ashleigh Johnson, Teach Healthier After School Instructor, Austin TX
"As a soccer instructor, I love having the opportunity to share my passion with the kids. It's so rewarding to see students take pride in learning a new skill, or making a great play. And as a female soccer player, I love seeing the girls take on the boys and realizing they can be just as tough!" -
Teresa Dodds, Brule Elementary School Nurse, Navasota ISD
"I first downloaded the Teach Healthier App to earn points for the IT'S TIME TEXAS Community Challenge. Since then I've used the lessons with our After School Tutoring Program; I do a lesson/activity and provide a healthy snack for about 75 students, 3 days a week. In August, 15+ employees attended the health and wellness presentation I did for our district-wide staff development symposium; They learned about the Teach Healthier App, they downloaded the App, and we did a couple of the activities! They learned how the App can assist them in the classroom, at home, and in the community. The Pre-K teachers were excited to learn about the new section geared toward the younger students. We talked about how the Professional Standards are provided at the end of each lesson. Some of my students' favorite lessons have been "Veggies of All Colors", "Energy Balance", "Snack Grains", "Vitamin D", and "Farmers Market". We've done the yoga poses and walked around the gym balancing our snack on our head. We've talked about the sources of Vitamin D and then played in the sunshine while eating frozen Gogurts! I review the lessons and sometimes incorporate ideas from other sources. Or, sometimes we'll do things in teams instead of pairs (like the Farmer's Market relay). My goal is to do an Inservice for my campus staff, stressing the benefits of using the Teach Healthier App lessons as a part of their weekly lesson plans!" -
Gabriela O'Dell, Professional Counselor & Mind-Body-Spirit Practitioner, San Antonio, TX
"I have been working with adults, children, and families in the San Antonio area since 2008. I am passionate about helping kids and families de-stress, work through life challenges, and incorporate mind-body practices to achieve greater physical and mental health. I have been licensed as a counselor since 2005. I am a registered play therapist and I bring in healthy living concepts with my work with all my clients. I am now in my 4th year of a Mind-Body Medicine PhD program through Saybrook University. The program's focus is on integrative mental health. I believe wellness comes through education, prevention, and addressing all aspects of a person's lifestyle to attain better balance and health. Prior to starting my PhD program I took my self-care and health to another level. I was 60 lbs overweight and I was so DONE with feeling achy, tired, and sad about my health. I started to go to Hot Yoga and I changed my entire diet. Over the course of about 2 years I lost the 60 lbs though prioritizing my health, working out 3-4 times a week and maintaining a much cleaner diet. During my PhD program I have learned so much. I share my story with my clients and the progress they have made in their healing journey never ceases to amaze me. I have been able to inspire others, support and encourage family members who have also started their own journey to better health. Each child and family I see has their own unique needs and together we have been able to address the mental health needs of their children while improving the stress level of their parents. I measure their success through the discontinuation of therapy and through their report of increased health and more balanced lifestyle. IT'S TIME for a greater awareness of how mental health affects the body. People need to shift their focus on singling out phyisical health from mental health." -
Paul South, Health and Wellness Coach, One Heart Life, Temple, TX
"I am a heart attack survivor. During my stay in the hospital I was diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. On top of that I was already about 40 pounds heavier and had psoriasis but through my stubbornness, luck and willingness to change to a healthier lifestyle all of these conditions are either under control or severely reduced. My prescribed medications have been eliminated and/or substantially reduced (under doctor's orders, of course). I have lost about 40lbs since the heart attack and my daughter reads labels with us at the grocery store! Her school lunches are packed fresh every day and she has been the topic of conversations at her school during lunchtime! Earlier this year I became certified as a Health and Wellness Coach and I help clients, both individuals and groups, learn about and achieve optimal wellness through information, experience, services and fun hands-on activities. I use trusted science-based information, positive encouragement and continued motivation to help them set and achieve health and wellness goals. IT'S TIME for our country to know how to eat healthier!" -
Jessika Langston, Owner/Personal Trainer, Swanky Strength, Selma, TX
"I am very passionate about educating and guiding others to make changes in order to live healthier lives. I have clients whom I have watched over the years become stronger, more active, and more flexible. It has been rewarding to help my clients, parents, and students to understand how small changes can make big differences. It is also an amazing feeling to help a client meet a goal, to teach a child how to cartwheel, or watch one of my teams win a major National competition. In addition to this, I am a type 1 diabetic who understands the demands of living with a chronic illness. I have found that others have a positive response when I share my story. It is possible to live well. It is possible to feel better. IT'S TIME for communities to come together, to motivate others, to inspire healthy living. Education is vital!" -
Maggie Wagner, Marketing Coordinator, IT'S TIME TEXAS
"I've done a lot of work on my mental health recently. This has involved grounding myself in the moment and being mindful as much as possible. Exercise has also been a great tool to help me deal with anxiety and stress. I love going for long hikes with my dog and regularly enjoy spinning classes at my local gym. After I've participated in one of these physical activities, I always feel much happier and less stressed out than I did before I started. Mainly, what motivates me to lead a healthy lifestyle is my own happiness. I've found over time that when I actively try to be healthy in body, mind, and spirit, I'm also just happier overall. In addition, the memory of my mother motivates me to remain as healthy as possible. She passed away due to an aggressive form of Breast Cancer when I was 9 years old. Ever since then I've always tried to make an effort to be healthy in an attempt to counter any unhealthy genetic predispositions I may already have. IT'S TIME for mental health awareness!" -
Vianey Gonzales, Quality Specialist, Tokyo Electron America, Austin TX
"In January of 2016, I received some health news that I had actually been anticipating for years. I needed to get serious about my health or I would be stuck with long term consequences. So, I decided to join the Weight Watchers at Work program in my office and started researching exercise options. That same week, I received an email from The Ballet Austin Butler Center for Dance and Fitness with the subject line: 'You could win FREE classes at Ballet Austin'. I have been a huge fan of Ballet Austin and have gone to several of the Butler Center Come Dance events where the community gets to participate in different types of dance. It is my “birthday weekend ritual” each year. I read through the email and went to the Community Challenge page, and knew it would be a stretch to get to their 4K goal by the end of March, but I was excited and determined to do it! I mapped out a plan of how to get to the 4K, and started to work my plan. During the Challenge, I did things that I never thought were possible for me. Outside of sticking with the weight watchers program (modifying it to be a mostly paleo plan,) I also tried different types of exercise to see what I enjoyed. I walked A LOT, and did various Fitbit challenges with my friends and family, and what I realized was that I do not like the treadmill. I also reinforced what I already knew - that I loved to dance. I joined the local YMCA, and started going to Cardio Funk class 2 – 3 times a week. I took advantage of the strength training, cardio and yoga classes that are offered at my work and also worked out to YouTube Zumba videos when I could not get to the gym. I walked, biked, went for hikes, and worked out with my kids and husband. Although I love to dance, I have never liked to 'work out' and during this challenge, I realized that I can incorporate the things I love and get the exercise I need. I actually DO like to 'exercise' now! Being accountable to my family and friends and to myself via the Community Challenge portal was additional motivation! In the end, I did get to the 4,000 point goal (actually 4030), and I lost 14 pounds! It was great to see so many communities and businesses work together on this Challenge. And while I am a part of the Austin community, “winning” for me is about winning for me – for my health, for my family and for my happiness. Winning was also about getting to my point goal so that I could get the one month unlimited pass at Balled Austin. I surpassed my points goal and the following day, went to Ballet Austin to start my one month. I just finished the free month last week and enjoyed 13 awesome classes – from strengthening, to ballet, to Zumba to Cardio Funk. It was an amazing month and I had SO much fun! And, I have continued to lose weight (now down 17 pounds) and am challenging myself even further (I just completed my first 5K this last weekend)! I have hosted a couple of healthy events since the end of the Challenge, helping people at work start a discussion on how to be healthy with a family and how to organize their weight loss journey. Oh, and if all of this wasn’t enough, I also got great news on my lab work recently. Everything is now back to normal! I am setting a great example for my daughters to be healthier, in a healthy way. I still have a long journey ahead of me, and believe, more than ever, that I will get there! I had never participated in this event before, and now I am excited to continue to participate and bring others along with me." -
Paula Thomas, Northeast Texas Public Health District, Quitman TX
"I helped found a local wellness coalition and we have done several events to help promote our local parks through runs, fun days and promotion of farmers markets. We helped re-establish our local parks and recreation board, who just received a grant to build a walking trail to connect our neighborhoods and our elementary school. I am very excited about how much ground we have gained in the past 3 years. I love working with children and those with chronic disease such as diabetes. My hope is to continue to work with my partners to help provide access to these areas!" -
Kali Patrick, Mind-Body Wellness Consultant, San Antonio TX
"In 1998, I added power yoga into my fitness routine to increase my flexibility and started exploring meditation to offset the stress of my high-tech corporate job. It wasn’t until many years later that I started to see more clearly what it meant to be healthy. In 2012, I took the full leap into mind-body wellness, forming 'A Journey Into Health.' I became a certified yoga instructor and an Eating Psychology Coach. In classes and in one-on-one sessions, I enjoy working with beginners (especially people who don’t think they can “do yoga”), and with people who have physical, mental, or emotional limitations. I believe each person is unique and ever-changing, so there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to health issues or goals. I have given up a high-paying but stressful job to focus on helping others and doing what I love. I have successfully given up gluten and dairy, and transformed from someone who hated to cook to someone who loves to cook healthy meals within reasonable timeframes and with reasonable skill! I have overcome a binge/overeating habit. I have stopped weighing myself and otherwise measuring my food, as well as measuring myself against others in work, home, and life. I measure my success by the way my mind, body, and life feel: simpler and easier. IT'S TIME for fewer rules and restrictions, and more intentional and mindful choices." -
Hannah Uhlig, Student at the University of Texas, Austin TX
"In my personal life, I volunteered for Austin Pets Alive! as a Rufftail Runner. This increased my own activity along with the pups'! I also own a fantastic garage gym (courtesy of FringeSport) and weight lift often, either at home or at Austin Simply Fit. My interest in weightlifting was first sparked through Texas WOD Club. As an officer of this club, I was able to encourage other UT Austin students to take an interest in their own health and begin group weightlifting. Success here was seen in the exponential club growth, retaining members, and improved strength/endurance. IT'S TIME to address this health/obesity epidemic and improve our individual and community health!" -
Nelda Jasso, Teacher at Baker Middle School, Corpus Christi ISD, Corpus Christi TX
"I read about the Challenge and thought it was a great idea for the community to come together and get active. To earn points for the competition, I have exercised, taken the selfies, and kept track of my weight. I got my whole school registered and have taken many staff shout outs! I have also led several walks and exercise classes for the staff and have gotten my principal and PTA president involved. This competition is important because it would remove our label as being the fattest city in Texas. IT'S TIME for Corpus Christi to be the most active and healthiest city in Texas!" -
Tristan Cisco, Water Conservation Education Coordinator for the Town of Prosper, Prosper TX
"The staff here at the Town of Prosper has really dove head first into this Challenge. Encouraging others to post their Healthy Selfies and 'Walk for Wellness' every Friday has helped to hold a lot of us accountable. It's fun to get people from other departments together to do something to make our workplace healthier! I think that we, as a whole, have worked so hard to accumulate the points for our community, that taking home the win will make us even more proud to be a part of Prosper! I think winning will show the community that we can all come together for something great, and I am so glad that I am a part of it! IT'S TIME for Texans to take the initiative and get fit!" -
Julie Shivers, Recreation Coordinator for the Town of Prosper, Prosper TX
"I energized the Challenge early on by encouraging staff to register and take and post healthy Selfies. Throughout the competition, I personally invited staff to get engaged; participated in the regular workplace walks; worked to form the Mayor's Fitness Council; and helped produce the 'Mayor's Challenge' video. With the Mayor and Town Council's support, we visited and emailed businesses, churches, and schools to describe the Challenge ask for support. Also, we participated in the presentation to the Chamber of Commerce which directly targeted those local businesses who are community-minded. The Challenge competition is important because it increases awareness of health and wellness on a daily basis, for both residents and staff. IT'S TIME for Texans to get outdoors and get moving!" -
Kimberly Hanson, Teacher at Bel Air Elementary School, Athens TX
“When I signed up for the Challenge, I knew I wanted to take it seriously and really make an impact in our community. This is the first time I have participated, but I think it is something that we should continue to do even after the competition ends. Our impact can run deep when we educate our students about being healthy. As a teacher, I want to be the best I can be for these kids. If I'm not doing my part, eating healthy, being physical, and teaching nutrition to the kids, then I'm not being a good role model. I don't see this as a competition between communities. Everyone who has stepped up and made this pledge is a winner. We are all winners because we chose to do what's best for us. No matter if we win or lose, I know I'm making a huge impact in the lives of these kids because they are making healthier choices every day. IT’S TIME for communities to educate the youth on the importance of being healthy! They are our future!” -
Richard Scott, The City of Pasadena, Pasadena, TX
"For the past year, the city of Pasadena has been involved with the Harris County Healthy living program. We've set goals that include eating healthy food, exercising, and educating our children in the city. The message is getting out to all our schools and the community, and making a large impact. I see more and more people getting involved as a result of these programs that are now being offered. IT'S TIME for Pasadena to continue to commit to making healthy easier!" -
Angela Rubio, Coordinated School Health Specialist, Pasadena ISD, Pasadena TX
"My job is to help make healthy the norm in Pasadena. Finding new ways to spread the message of health and wellness to our students, families, and communities is important. Winning the challenge would give us recognition for the efforts we make and would allow us to share the accomplishment with the community and at the same time encourage our community to focus on making healthier choices. IT'S TIME to give ourselves the health we deserve!" -
Kristi Soto, Social Media Contest Specialist for the Town of Prosper, Prosper TX
"To earn points for the Community Challenge, I have stepped up my healthy selfie game, that is for sure. I am not shy about taking a selfie, so every time I am eating something healthy, or drinking water, I make sure to record it. I also love doing Zumba and Yoga all week, so I make sure to document my workouts in the activity log. Here at the Town of Prosper, we really have worked as a team to make sure we are doing everything we can to incorporate healthy activities in our everyday tasks. During meetings, we stand. Every Friday, we all go for a morning walk. If we see someone drinking a soda, we take it away and replace it with a water bottle. Our Town Mayor, Ray Smith, even created a "Mayor's Challenge" video to encourage everyone from the community to participate. Local businesses, churches, and school officials have also done a tremendous job in signing pledges. Having a healthy community is automatically a win for everyone, so here at the Town of Prosper, we really do want to encourage people to live healthier lives. Of course we all have a competitive spirit in us to win, but this is more than just winning a trophy; this is promoting a better quality of life for the residents we work for. IT"S TIME for Texans to put the doughnuts down!" -
Ana Diaz, Student at Texas State University, San Marcos TX
"In October 2015, I was diagnosed and hospitalized with sepsis and MRSA in all five lobes of both my lungs. I was put on a ventilator and sedated for 21 days. My right lung collapsed, and I had to be put on dialysis because my kidneys stopped functioning. I was in the hospital for 32 days plus seven days in rehab to learn how to walk again. This was a life changing experience for me because once I fully recovered, I realized how important my health really is. My doctors have told me that my recovery is a miracle, and the fact that I was healthy before helped me tremendously. My health and your health is one of the most important things; it is something we must treasure and never take for granted. I am motivated to live a healthy lifestyle because I want to be around to see my family and help others. My very traumatic experience has helped me realize how important our health is, and I have learned that in order to stay and be healthy, I must eat well to help my body stay strong. The healthier you are today, the better chance you have of recovering from unexpected illnesses! IT'S TIME for you to make healthy choices!" -
Ilde Quintero, Personal Trainer, San Antonio TX
“I am a health and fitness professional and enthusiast. At the young age of 39, I was unhealthy and overweight. Feeling constantly sluggish and tired, I visited a doctor and quickly realized that I needed to make some lifestyle changes. Through healthy eating and an exercise plan, I was able to lose 70 lbs over the course of one year, and I've never felt better or been healthier. Now at the age of 42, I am in the best shape of my life. Improving health has become a way of life for me in recent years. I am careful about what I put in my body in terms of food, realizing that eating and living healthy is a privilege as opposed to a burden. I try to teach this philosophy to others so they see eating and living healthy in a positive light. I workout 6-8 hours per week and spend another 15-20 hours per week leading others through either group fitness classes or personal training sessions in their homes. My personal fitness journey has inspired me to help others regain control of their health through clean eating and exercise, and I am excited to share what I know with them so they can begin their own health and fitness journeys. IT’S TIME to teach our children at an early age how and why it is important to make great health decisions!” -
Linda Lindsey, PE Coach at Gilbert J. Mirchovich Elementary, Corpus Christi TX
"We have begun promoting healthy habits by encouraging our students to choose fruits and vegetables for snacks and to exercise with a family member twice per week. We do a bi-weekly taste comparison food test and promote themed, family-fitness events such as the 'Punt, Pass, Kick' team relay on the Friday before the Super Bowl. We've also established our first ever student running club. We have had 151 students join, and practice has been awesome! I want to be a terrific model for my students and stay active and healthy for my family. IT'S TIME for GJM Ingleside Mini-mustangs and their families to create healthy, fun-fitness habits!" -
Jennifer Montes, Gilbert Elementary, San Antonio TX
"Our Safety Patrols are on a mission to improve health and wellness in our school and community. They are creating opportunities for students, staff, and parents to live healthy through exercise and education. Parents can attend monthly health seminars on topics such as nutrition, diabetes, heart health, pre-natal care, dental health, and cancer awareness. Weekly Zumba classes are provided free of charge for students, staff, parents, and community members. Sports clinics will be provided free of charge for students to learn the fundamentals of basketball, football, and soccer. Our students are also providing Monday morning healthy tips, and we have a classroom challenge to encourage teachers to give their students brain breaks and to get students moving in the classroom. Lastly, some staff and students are participating in a virtual 200-mile-run/walk called the 'Texas 200.' They are challenged to run/walk 200 miles within a six-month period. Our students motivate us to be healthy. IT'S TIME for Texans to live healthy for LIFE!" -
Claire Hahn, Wellness Manager, University of Texas, Austin TX
"This year the University of Texas at Austin is excited to help Austin win the Community Challenge. We took the pledge last year, and this year we have stepped up our efforts to get more people involved and highlight the healthy activities that happen right here on campus. We are hosting registration events with healthy, fun activities that get people outside and moving. We had a heart walk for faculty and staff, and we are proud to be part of the Farm-to-Work program from the Sustainable Food Center. The university also participates in Austin's Business Group on Health. We meet quarterly to share what worksites are doing to become healthier. This year several worksites are getting involved in the Challenge as well. On a personal level, I have been taking more walking breaks, bringing my lunch to work, and cooking healthy meals. I have been logging my activity and posting all the healthy selfies that I can. This competition is important to us because Austin already has many initiatives to encourage health, and it is time to showcase what we do. Winning the competition would mean so much to us and demonstrate that our efforts to provide opportunities to be healthy are paying off. IT'S TIME for Longhorns to get moving!" -
Ashlynne Youngblood, University of Texas, Austin TX
"Healthy living has always been an issue in my family. In high school, my brother and I decided to turn our habits around. A couple of years later, we were able to convince my dad to ride his bike to work. Then he took it upon himself to ride his bike down the street everyday to buy fresh produce for that night's dinner. It was incredibly rewarding to see the transformation in my dad's lifestyle. A little bit of motivation and personal modeling can influence those close to you, potentially creating a domino effect. I play the biggest role in motivating myself to pursue a healthy lifestyle. I feel a strong internal obligation to lead a healthy lifestyle because I know that if I can take care of my body and my brain, I will be able to take care of others and potentially help the community as a whole. When I grow older, I want to be able to be active with my children and take care of my parents. I want to be able to lead in my future career endeavors and have a healthy mind to execute any idea that I wish. I do not want my health to ever hold me or anyone back. IT'S TIME for a health immersion!" -
Jennifer Fisher, Chef and Fitness Consultant, San Antonio TX
"I believe health and wellness are not end goals but a lifelong process. If you make eating well, exercising, and getting quality sleep priorities, then everything else falls into place. Soon, living healthy is not a chore; it's something you want to do everyday. I say this as someone who has never had a weight or fitness issue, so I know that others struggle and it is not easy. I love to support and provide encouragement for those of all abilities and stages in their journeys. I'm an ambassador for several races, including Zooma and Fit Foodie Run, and I have volunteer coached an elementary running team. Also, as an athlete getting older, I find it hard to measure success when physical abilities are changing (e.g. I can't run a marathon as fast as I could 20 years ago, etc.). However, I focus on what I can do and set goals to learn new things like yoga. I am surprised by how much I enjoy yoga after getting into it only two years ago. I also firmly believe in not taking things too seriously and forgiving one's self for a step backward in fitness and diet. One of the hashtags I like to use on my social media is #keepingfitfun. I motivate myself to make healthy choices, as I am very self driven and competitive in sports. IT'S TIME for spreading the word about health, connecting people to workout together, and #keepingfitfun!" -
Alise Neff, Kinesthetic Learning Liaison at Sparks Elementary, Pasadena TX
"For the last five years, our school has tried to improve students’ health by performing brain energizers throughout the day, adding recess back into the day, and incorporating movement into our morning announcements. Recently, we’ve started setting up Action Based Learning Labs (ABL) at our school. The concept of an ABL, or kinesthetic classroom, is based on brain research that strongly supports the link between movement and increased academic performance. Studies show that engaging in physical activity while learning improves memory retention, reinforces academic concepts, and balances brain chemicals. To create kinesthetic classrooms, we took out all the desks and chairs in the rooms and replaced them with Ergo stools, stability balls, and foot fidgets. After putting in the new equipment, we saw a huge difference in focus during whole-group instruction, less off-task behaviors, and even less discipline problems. Our principal has been extremely supportive of the initiative and has spent budget money to purchase equipment for additional kinesthetic classrooms. I believe that what we are doing is having a great effect on students. Adding kinesthetic classrooms into our school has facilitated discussions among teachers, parents, and students about the brain, muscles, nutrition, and overall health." -
Jim Dwight, Coppell TX
"In 2012, I was diagnosed with amyloidosis (cancer of the blood) and underwent a procedure that used heparin to collect stem cells for a transplant. It wasn't until I clotted extensively and went into a six-week-long coma that the doctors realized I was severely allergic to Heparin. I could not move my legs when I came out of the coma. I was also blind in my right eye and deaf in my right ear. I did physical therapy and was released from MD Anderson three months later with a walker and went home on dialysis. In March 2013, my condition had improved enough for the stem cell transplant. Thankfully, it was successful and I am in remission today. In 2014, we moved to Coppell and joined the Senior Center. My kidneys improved enough that I was able to get off dialysis, but I had to get a pacemaker--all related to complications from my Heparin allergy. I was still about 30 pounds under my 2012 weight and had no stamina, so I enrolled in the Community Challenge/Living Well Program and started doing aerobic exercises and weight training. The program encouraged me to improve. My strength has improved and I regularly do cardio at a rate of 120. Recently, I had my pacemaker checked and the technician asked what I was doing when my heart rate went to 150. I realized that I had been doing ellipticals on the Senior Center machine with the exercise set for mountain climbing. I had reduced the grade when I started really breathing hard, but did not realize I had reached a heart rate of 150. Before Community Challenge/Living Well program I simply would have passed out. I am thankful for Living Well in Coppell’s Community Challenge and participating in the 2016 program. Coppell is a community serious about wellness and is working hard to win the Community Challenge again in 2016! IT'S TIME to get and stay healthy for a lifetime!" -
Todd Herauf, Richard J. Lee Elementary, Lewisville TX
"I began my transformation slowly, as I wanted to make sure it 'stuck.' I began by cleaning out the unhealthy foods in our pantry and fridge. Then I began to plan and track my meals. It helped with the accountability and I lost about 30 pounds! I want to be there in the long run for my family and friends. It just makes sense, as a father of two, to do everything I can to be a role model for my kids, both those at home and the nearly 700 at work! IT'S TIME for parents everywhere to make positive, healthy choices as role models for kids everywhere!" -
John Libby, PE Coach at Vestal Elementary, Corpus Christi TX
"I have created a biggest loser challenge for our campus as well as created a K-SHAC that is very active promoting health and wellness on our campus. I have had one event already this year for our community and I plan on having at least one per month for the rest of the school year! Winning the Community Challenge would mean I have been successful in promoting health and wellness to a community that has a need for this type of awareness. Obesity and diabetes are a major concern for our community and anything I can do to help bring awareness and encourage healthier living would be a win in my book." -
Tanda Turner, Family Engagement Specialist, Austin TX
"I am a consultant for family engagement activities and I oversee activities that are provided at schools in six different school districts in and around the Austin Area. I really love the idea of incorporating physical activity through the Teach Healthier warm-ups and energizers. They are very energizing and great information for parents! I love the idea of delivering information about nutrition in easy-to-swallow doses. And any time you put movement into learning, it's always a success. I really am happy to know there's a whole curriculum available to us that's very easy to use." -
Coach Kendall Riley, Hexter Elementary, Dallas TX
"Our school and community LOVE the track so much! We are so thankful to you for helping us realize this dream! Here are some pictures of the kids running. Kids can earn 'feet' for their key chain for every 5 miles they walk or run, and teachers can earn a pass to wear jeans for the day...needless to say it is a big hit, and we couldn't have done it without you!" -
Nicole Garza, Harlandale ISD & Graduate Student at TX A&M University - San Antonio
"In my personal life, I have taken the time to learn what my body needs to maintain, lose or gain. I am firm believer that some foods will offset our health due to how our bodies digest or react. I took the time to learn what works for my body and lifestyle so that I may teach others how to figure out what works for them. I measure my success by those around me changing the little things for example; when I started in this office position, I always carried a water bottle everywhere I went. This transpired to my supervisor noticing and buying everyone in the office a water bottle. The change in office culture was a success, a small step leading to a bigger impact. Society is my main motivator to lead a healthy lifestyle. There is also one individual in my life that has taught me a lot about the choice we make and how they can have negative consequences. My grandmother died at a really young age, and it all stemmed from the way she ate during her life. Those unhealthy eating habits led to diabetes, which then led to a lot of other health conditions which eventually led to death. One of the hardest things I saw was watching her body shut down, and the way her choices led to this. She left a mark on me that motivates me to motivate myself and others. The choices we make in our nutrition and activity levels play a huge factor on our lifespan and overall quality of life. ITS TIME For a Health Culture Change Everywhere!" -
Mark Jonse, UTSA Graduate & IT'S TIME TEXAS Ambassador, Bexar TX
"Growing up I was the 'fat kid,' and for the longest time I believed that's who I was and that's who I would always be. It wasn't until my junior year of high school that a friend of mine from band (who also happened to be on the varsity football team) reached out and asked if I ever wanted to join him in the gym. Figuring I had nothing to lose, I decided to tag along with him, and thus began my healthy living revolution. Within my first 6 months of working out I went from about 300 pounds to around 245 pounds. Wanting to lose more weight I began doing my own research. I cut out fast food, sodas, and eating late at night. Within another year I had dropped another 30 pounds (which was hard to do being a freshman in college)! After losing a total of about 80 pounds I still wanted more! I had become addicted to bettering myself and the results that came from it. I started incorporating all types of cardio to help me cut those last 20 pounds. Within another year I had finally dipped below the 200 pound mark. In losing all of my weight, I learned that it's a commitment that YOU have to make for yourself, no one else can do it for you. There is no magic pill that will make you lose weight and sometimes you're going to slip up and gain a few pounds back. It's all about getting yourself back on track and realizing that it's a journey, not a race. I've learned that there is no finish line; once I met my goal of losing 100 pounds the next thing that was on my mind was "okay now how do I make sure that I don't gain it back?" And for over 5 years now I've managed to keep my weight right where I want it with correct diet and exercise. I want people to know that it's hard work but it's SO possible to lose weight, and if I can do it, anyone can! Having been on the heavier side for the majority of my life I know the consequences of what can happen if I don't maintain all of my hard work. Of course you have to live a little and enjoy meals with family and friends, but I know exactly what I need to do in order to get myself back on track after said meal. I would also have to say I do it for all my family and friends. So many of them have seen my transformation and have since felt comfortable asking me questions about health and fitness. I, for one, know how intimidating it can be asking someone for health advice so I'm glad I can be there for them. IT'S TIME for Texans to realize that anyone can lead a healthy lifestyle!" -
Kevin Elwood, Teach Healthier After School Instructor, Austin TX
"My mom has always been a advocate for a healthy lifestyle ever since I was very young. I have been a provider of information in regards to healthy lifestyles to family and friends and myself. To me, success is measured by how far you have personally improved from where you were and the goals you intend to keep moving forward. IT'S TIME for people to get started or continue down the path of a healthy life!" -
Terrence Ates, Northeast Texas Public Health District, Tyler TX
"I am a native Tylerite, a product of Tyler ISD, graduate of Tyler Junior College and UT Tyler. My wife, Jeanie, and I have 2 daughters and one granddaughter. I have previously worked as a gymnastics coach, a waiter, a WalMart cashier, an overnight WalMart stocker, a pizza delivery driver, a college professor, a grant research assistant and a professional wrestler - but not in that order. Every day is different and life is what you make of it. I was an obese child and was obese after I graduated high school, until my wife (then girlfriend) and I became kinesiology majors and taught ourselves how to live healthy. I am a totally different person when I include physical activity and smart eating habits into my daily activities, and my influence upon my family and upon my coworkers motivates me to continue winning the daily and weekly struggle to be the healthiest me that I can be. Tyler leaders know that education is affected by health and a population thrives when its students are exposed to higher educational opportunities. Tyler is recognized as a destination for residents from approximately 20 counties in northeast Texas and the Tyler metropolitan area hosts an increasing number of community walks, competitive runs, charity events and bicycle rides. The future health of Tylerites and East Texans motivates Fit City Tyler to continue motivating residents to lead healthy lifestyles and to make daily choices that will ensure healthy futures! IT'S TIME for Texas to accept the East Texas Plank Challenge. IT'S TIME for Texas to Walk With a Doc! IT'S TIME for Texas to become a tobacco-free state and IT'S TIME for the nation to choose more active transportation options. IT'S TIME for Texas to achieve healthier outcomes 'one bite, one step and one health-conscious decision at a time'." Want to learn more about Terrence's amazing work in Tyler? Sara Ronder, Business Administrator at Integrity Academy, Austin TX
"I work at an incredible school that focuses on whole food plant based diet, physical and outdoor education and healthy appreciation for nutrition and community. I am a thirteen year ovarian cancer survivor and single mother of a very tall and energetic six year old. I really enjoy being able to travel with my son and lend a helpful hand in communities all across Texas. I have improved my health by reducing the levels of processed foods and drinks, cooking and meal planning, and planning a physical activity every day that is followed up by being "lazy" and relaxing with my son! Being an ovarian cancer survivor, I was dumbfounded when I realized that it’s as simple as me cutting processed sugar out of my diet and really paying attention to the amount of sweets I was putting into my body. Facing death at such a young age definitely put some things into perspective and I found that I missed eating foods that made me feel good. During my treatment, I needed to restrict my intake of fruits and vegetables, as they could carry bacteria that would be difficult to kill off with my weaken immune system. My diet consisted of mostly white, tan, and brown food items. Once I finished chemotherapy I couldn’t get enough salad! It became a fun game of seeing what combination of greens, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds and dressings went well together. My son and I have a wonderful time seeing who can eat the most salad. I also have a personal challenge for myself every day to drink 1 cup of water for every other drink, whether it’s tea or juice. I have increased the amount of water I drink every day and encourage my coworkers to be in competition with each other so that they remember throughout the day to take perpetual sips! By increasing my water intake, I naturally lost 5 pounds from my base weight that I had maintained for over 10 years. It is also easier to wake up in the morning with a clear sense of things. I don’t have morning 'fog brain' and am able to eat breakfast, which was something that I could not do before. I have more energy, patience, and get overwhelmed with responsibility much less. IT'S TIME for access to quality water! Children should be allowed to drink water all day long. They should also be allowed to use the restroom when they need to. I believe wholeheartedly that if every student is given a water bottle at the beginning of the school year and are reminded to sip throughout the day, their attention span would increase, they would have the body awareness to make better choices about what to eat and when to stop, and would not suffer from dehydration as quickly during physical activities, allowing them to play harder for longer." -
Lea Scott, Farm Director, Urban Roots, Austin TX
"The need that was initially seen was connection to food, an understanding of food and how it’s grown, and opportunity for youth to engage their community in a larger way. It’s entirely run by them. It’s youth voice, which is a primary piece of the organization. We really want to facilitate a space that’s not only safe but also encouraging for youth to be heard. We have conversations with interns about their lunch that they’re bringing, or we do a veggie of the week that’s in season and provide recipes and encourage the youth to cook with those at home and bring it in a share… you feel more invested in it when you’ve grown it, and then to have a really great meal to share with people, it’s an eye-opening process. And it’s a really great opportunity for people to have ‘food firsts’! IT'S TIME for people to be engaged in their food system in a meaningful way." -
Dana Harada, Austin TX
"I use Choose Healthier because it makes finding workouts around Austin so easy. Through the app, I've found new fitness classes that I would have never found before like kickboxing at Fight Club Austin. I get bored easily and am always looking for a new fitness class, so Choose Healthier is the perfect solution for me. I also like that you can filter the classes based on cost and level!" -
Jillian Penque, Assistant Program Manager, Active Wellness LLC at Freescale, Austin TX
"I am the youngest of 5 girls and I grew up in Corsicana, Texas. I started getting into 'fitness' when I was an exchange student in Brazil after high school (I grew up playing soccer). We would go to the gym and take the group classes, eat sweets on the way home, and then go to the beach! What a charmed life. But that experience put me on the path to where I am today! I love running simply because it's free and you can do it anywhere! The half-marathon used to be my favorite distance, but lately I have been trying to hit the track! My favorite things in Austin are to go to Town Lake, get coffee, and hang out with my sisters! I've done my best to meet people where they are when it comes to healthy habits. I've implemented many programs such as Biggest Loser, and have had great success with clients! I try my best to revamp programs and hope that people find something they love to do, or some way to change a bad habit. I feel most successful when people I work with try something that they never would have tried before. I have stopped thinking of things as healthy or unhealthy. It's just what I do and how I live. It just happens to be 'healthy'. IT'S TIME to start creating truly healthy communities EVERYWHERE!" -
Madison Irby, Starbucks Barista, Austin TX
"I downloaded the [Choose Healthier] app after graduating from Austin High and starting to work with Starbucks. I myself am a little clueless, cheap, and broke, so the app was perfect! It has literally been a life saver since I've been diagnosed with PCOS. I'm able to see free local yoga classes and workout classes to help my recent-high-school-graduate self maintain a healthy lifestyle." -
Eric Melchor, Founder of Fly Movement & IT'S TIME TEXAS Ambassador, Houston TX
"Fly Movement is the first kids’ health program that provides students an opportunity to reach a fitness goal through fun, rewarding team competition. As a result, they learn how to develop goal setting habits, their fitness activity increases, and they establish a positive feeling towards physical activity!" www.fly-movement.com -
Adrienne Kegler, The Galveston County Food Bank, Galveston, TX
"As a SNAP-Ed Nutrition Educator at the Galveston County Food Bank, I am in a unique position to educate vulnerable populations of children and adults of all ages on the benefits of preparing and eating nutritious meals and incorporating more physical activity into their daily routines; all of which helps them improve their overall health outcomes and prevent the incidence of obesity and chronic diseases. The Teach Healthier App has allowed me to better engage children in physical activity by recommending age-appropriate activities that are not only fun, educator-friendly, and enjoyable; but they can be easily manipulated to accommodate a need. One of my favorite Teach Healthier activities is the 'Veggies of All Colors, Oh My!' workout because a nutrition message is now attached to the very game I played as a kid! In using the Teach Healthier App throughout various parts of a SNAP-Ed nutrition class series this past summer, I measured the effectiveness of the weekly nutrition messages and exposure to the Teach Healthier activities through testimonials from some of the child participants who shared with me that they had actually been doing some of the activities outside of the class environment! It was confirmation that they received the message, and that they were motivated to apply what they had learned towards changing behaviors. As for myself, I measure success through my ability to commit to even the smallest of changes with regards to my personal nutrition and fitness behaviors. I have learned that changing a health behavior is a great step, but committing to the change has a greater impact! When I imagine living a longer, healthier life and being around to fully enjoy my family for generations to come, I am motivated to make healthier choices. When I continue to assert that I CAN overcome the barriers or restrictions that would otherwise prevent me from enjoying an active lifestyle with my little one, I am motivated to make sustainable health behavior changes for myself and my family. When I see the quality of life that people near and dear to me are currently experiencing due to the chronic diseases that could have been prevented through proper diet and exercise, I am motivated to make the choices that will decrease and/or minimize my chances of being adversely impacted by the same chronic health conditions. IT'S TIME to become empowered to be your own health advocate!" -
Erika Guerra, Victor H. Hexter Elementary, Dallas TX
"I have had so much fun leading other teachers after school through workouts and promoting the healthy lifestyle change I have made for myself in what I eat. Many teachers have joined me, and I can say that the result is 65 pounds lost and a stronger, healthier, and all around happier body and mind. My daughter is by far my biggest inspiration. I want to be there for everything I can in her life. I want to be healthy enough to say I am an active adult at age 80. IT'S TIME for healthy hearts, minds, and bodies!" -
Richard Torres, Health & Physical Education Specialist, Corpus Christi ISD
"This is the curriculum we want to adopt because it's research based, and it's got the TEKS in it. It's been structured to meet our needs. I did a campus visit just today and the principal is gung-ho about it. She says, 'it's supporting our gardens, it supports our core subjects, it supports physical activity, so we want it.' This is the first time in about ten years if not more when we have a superintendent who understands the importance of physical education. Then, we have a deputy superintendent who understands that there’s so much research supporting that if students are participating in physical activity and eating healthy their scores are going to come up. We have administrators at the very top who are supporting what we’re doing.” -
Eliz Perez, Founder, Yoga Con Amor, Austin TX
"When we opened this studio, our intention was to fill a void we detected in the yoga community in Austin and to catch all the people who were a little bit intimidated by other studios or didn't feel comfortable moving at their pace. We created Yoga Con Amor to serve everyone. It could be a twenty-year-old to a seventy-year-old, and you could see those people together in one class. Yoga is not fancy. If you study the philosophy and the history behind it, going from that to $100 pants and a sense of competition doesn't really make sense. We want to stay true to the original yoga! Just come and breathe, everything else is just icing on the cake. If you can move the entire hour, you did a beautiful practice. How your poses look or how many poses you did is secondary." -
Michael Love, Professional Dancer, Tapestry Dance Company, Austin TX
"Tapestry Dance Company's focus is on diversifying the dance landscape in Texas and beyond- it serves as the home for a professional tap company, and also houses an academy which strives to make a wide range of dance styles accessible to the community. It's all about weaving different stories and types of movement and dance expression together. One of the biggest differences between Tapestry and other dance organizations is that our focus is less on competition and more on the community experience of teaching, sharing, and dancing together. Most of the time when I'm rehearsal or performing with the company I'm in my tap shoes, which I absolutely love. However, I also enjoy the opportunity to put on my sneakers and teach an Adult Beginner Hip-Hop class at 1:30 on Saturdays! My students are all at different levels, and each is pushing themselves in a different way. There is a common fun to be had! What's great about the Choose Healthier App is that it allows all of us to identify and take advantage of these types of experiences." www.dancermlove.com -
Christee Jackson, University of Texas Charter System, Austin & Driftwood TX
"I have changed the way I eat and make healthier food choices. I also started working out when I was about 40 years old. At my campus in Driftwood, I am working with the boys (students) and the facility staff to implement staff vs. student games. The boys and I have also talked to the facility administration and are planning/building an obstacle course. I have researched the effects of trauma on children and there is a correlation to movement and learning. Students need to get up and move periodically in order to change their state, but also to reactivate the brain. Leading by example is important to me. I am an educator working with students who are primarily in CPS care, living in residential treatment facilities or shelters, and don't have healthy habits. I am also married to a personal trainer/gym owner (his business, X-Train, is in the Choose Healthier App!) and he likes to be active together. IT'S TIME for Educators to lead by example making healthy choices and staying active!" -
Jeff Key, Texas Tech University, Lubbock TX
"I work with students in pursuit of becoming teachers here at Texas Tech University. My students and I run an after school program called Fun & Fit. This program is all about making exercise fun for students by using games and activities instead of drills. The fun activities we cover are, but not limited to, basketball, football, striking, and many more age appropriate games and activities. I have directed this program at multiple sites for over 7 years. The feedback from students, parents, teachers, and other members of the community have been overwhelmly positive. My two daughters are really the main motivation behind why I try to lead a healthy life. My girls are 15 and 10 and I want to be around to continue to watch them grow into wonderful young women. Another reason I strive to stay healthy through my own personal pursuits such as running, mountain biking and lifting weights, is because as a physical education professional, I want to lead by example. IT'S TIME for Texas to be Fun & Fit!" -
Sari Albornoz, Grow Local Program Director, Sustainable Food Center, Austin TX
"Through Sustainable Food Center's Grow Local program, I've helped Austinites gain the knowledge, skills, and resources to grow their own food. Our work has helped hundreds of people establish school, community, and home food gardens. I've seen our success through stories from first-time gardeners excited about harvesting their first home-grown veggies. I've heard it from teachers who know from experience that their students will try anything they grow. And I've seen it in dozens of vacant lots transformed into breathtaking, food-producing community hubs. Myself, those I love, and my community motivate me to lead a healthy lifestyle! I know that when I am healthy, I feel strong, capable, and happy. When I feel this way, I'm able to be the best partner, friend, family-member, and community advocate I can be. IT'S TIME for a sustainable, equitable, food system that provides all adults and children with access to nutritious, culturally appropriate, affordable food." -
Mary Shahan, Dane Boyle Fitness, IT'S TIME TEXAS Ambassador, New Braunfels TX
"Living as a single woman, there is no one else to help with the goals or chores of the day. It requires me to prepare the night before to be organized for the adventures the next day will hold. Most mornings I have a several-mile run, cross training, or indoor cycling done by 9 AM! My days are full of action. From networking meetings, to motivational speaking, to meeting with clients, Dane and I are leading a healthy revolution in the fitness world one personal dream at a time! Most evenings I go out for a stroll, then it's off to bed to get a full night's rest. Tomorrow will call me to rise, lace my shoes and begin again, believing that each new day calls me to be my best, one more time. The most important thing I do for myself each day is make a plan for my movement. You must love yourself enough to set an appointment each day for your physical health." -
Zoya Surani, High School Student and IT'S TIME TEXAS Ambassador, Corpus Christi TX
"Through the project I co-founded, iConquer, we have taught over 7,000 children ages 3-7 in the past two years about healthy choices, obesity, and diabetes. This picture is of me wearing our project's mascot suit, Banunu, who is also the main character is our childrens' movies! My motivation is found from the children we teach, because their eyes light up when they try something that's not only good but also healthy. The way they love to live a healthy lifestyle is the greatest motivation anyone could ask for." -
Docia Craft, Educator, SHAC Member & IT'S TIME TEXAS Ambassador, Pflugerville TX
"I own my health. Respectfully engaging, equipping and encouraging others to own their health is essential to shaping our wellness culture. As far as measuring my success, my six daughters practice healthy lifestyles, my friends accept me just the way I am, and my former students are looking forward to turning thirty so I will pay them their well-deserved $100.00 (for practicing lifestyle health). It's all connected! I am motivated by the accrued power of our individual and group actions that will empower families to make healthy easier." -
David Galvin, Teach Healthier After School Instructor, Austin TX
"I love building the kids' confidence up to tackle challenges in life. Some of them will have low self esteem at the beginning or not be very social, but through the introduction of the team concept and meaningful praise a lot of them end up coming out of their shells by the end of the year. The nutrition information we provide through the Teach Healthier App is shocking to most of the students under 12 years old. A lot of them aren't very active at home or don't get a lot of adult interaction at home, so being able to help them grow physically, socially, and emotionally is a real treat. IT'S TIME for health to be common knowledge for kids!" -
Tracy Lunoff Spinner, Austin ISD School Health Coordinator
"Austin ISD has moved toward a whole child focus that encompasses the physical and mental health and well-being of students and staff. We're focused on innovation, from offering on-site mental healthy therapy to students, to community sponsored gardens, to telemedicine for employees, we strive to be the leaders in the area of comprehensive health. Personally, my focus is being a healthy, positive, role model for students and staff. To be holistically balanced with the right amount of health, wellness, career, fun, and family/friends. My motivation is intrinsic. I want to be the best version of myself, for my daughter, for my husband, for my family. IT'S TIME for healthy balance." -
Marcie Adame, IT'S TIME TEXAS Ambassador and Founder of Fit Nation, Garland TX
"Get your workout in first thing in the morning. Life is busy and often unexpected. I like my sleep, but I know that if I start my morning with 30 minutes of cross-training, I'll feel great! The hardest part is getting out of bed, so I have my workout clothes ready to pull on and my gear ready to start. I have made a space at home and at work to get my sweat on. I make it too convenient for excuses. Carve out 30 minutes for your health every morning and you'll feel proud and ready to handle anything that comes your way!" -
Marty Douglas, Lead Pastor, Five Points Church, Alvarado TX
"We started a group within our church called Five Points Strong to encourage our church to be active and involved in community events. Whenever an organized event is in our area, Five Points Strong will encourage members to get involved. We also co-sponsor a 5K run in the fall and promote other healthy events in the community. I try to lead the way by being as involved as I can in healthy events. Several years ago I started the journey of losing weight and becoming healthy. I really wanted to be healthy for my kids so that I can be there for them and involved in their lives. My faith in God is a huge motivation for me as well. I feel that if I am going to lead a congregation of people on their faith journey, that I need to lead the way in all areas of my life; spiritually and physically." -
Kathy Shields, Chronic Disease Prevention Manager, San Antonio TX
"The Por Vida! program is a healthy menu initiative that works with restaurants, worksite cafeterias, hospitals, universities and other food service establishments to create healthy menu choices for adults and children. We know that the majority of people eat out at restaurants or other type of food service establishments on a weekly basis regardless of income. Therefore, it is important to ensure that healthy menu choices are available and easy to identify. IT'S TIME for our communities across Texas to support and expect that healthy and affordable menu choices are available and marketed appropriately when eating away from home." -
Lidia Barillas, IT'S TIME TEXAS Programs Intern, Houston TX
“The moment when I noticed my figure was different than others, finding out my family has a history with diabetes, and hearing doctors tell my younger sister she was reaching a dangerous weight for her age… these moments have taught me that being healthy isn’t just ‘recommended,’ but it is crucial. Surrounding myself with friends who make exercising fun, choosing the right foods and putting myself in a positive mindset all make being healthy easier. All I can hope for is that I can be somewhat of an influence on my sister and my family. It only takes ONE to start a change. Be that ONE and you might start an unstoppable force of transformation.” -
Juan Diaz, 21st Century ACE Coordinator, Austin TX
“When I was overweight, when I was 90 pounds heavier than I am now, I was having heart problems, high blood pressure, cholesterol, I was pre-diabetic... I didn’t want to live like that, so I had to make some healthy changes. I’ve even had parents come and ask me, ‘how did you lose the weight? What can we do?’ During the Out of School Time Program, my kids are motivated, and they’re energized. IT’S TIME TEXAS can provide that for my kids, so I want them on my campus all the time, and I look forward to working with them, a lot.” -
Sheree Bailey, Wellness Coordinator, City of Austin
"We're all in the same boat trying to do the best we can to bring health and wellness to employees, and there's not a real easy way to show return on investment. You have to work hard, learn the numbers, get in there, dig into the healthcare plan, and look for ways to share information with the benefits staff, as well to get those results. IT'S TIME to empower employees to get healthy and well." -
Dallishia Janice, Student Ambassador, Round Rock TX
"My mom has diabetes, and I've been helping her get up and active. Every night we set up our Xbox Connect and we dance on there! It's really fun. I want her to be at my wedding. I don't want to lose her. I want to be old together. IT'S TIME TEXAS means encouraging people around the community to want to be healthier and living life, and it can be fun! Being healthy doesn't have to be bad. You can go outside and play with your kids! That's what we're trying to teach everyone... As an Ambassador, I feel like I mean something to everyone, I'm helping them, and I think it's really great to be that person people look up to." -
Coach Bob Knipe, UT Elementary, Austin TX
“I believe that schools should be the healthiest places for people to work and live, and our teachers want that! Our [Growing Healthy Schools] project was to install a staff wellness center, and there have been some amazing things happening. When my students are here in physical education, their teachers are in the room exercising, all being that role model that we’d like to see at every school. IT’S TIME to grow healthier schools, because schools should reflect our communities.” -
Laurie Lee, Chief Operating Officier, Shape Up Houston, Houston TX
"IT'S TIME for every single individual, not just in Texas but across the country, to realize how important good health is, how much it impacts not just us personally, but our families, our workplace, our communities at large, and our economies. Health is a tremendous influencer on life as we know it on many levels, so we all need to rally behind optimizing good health, making good health easy, accessible, and affordable for everyone." -
Barron Jackson, Owner & Trainer, X-Train Fitness Community, Austin TX
“I think Choose Healthier can really help people figure out what they want, what they like, and what’s out there… to have something at your disposal to be able to look up the best places to eat, fitness facilities in your area, and someone people can call and talk to to get help with nutrition... I haven’t seen anything like that.” -
Suzanne Heritage, Choose Healthier Coach, Austin TX
“It’s inspiring to be a part of a cause that thrives on inspiring others. Healthy CAN be easy. To me that is what my work is about, empowering people to make those sustainable changes that truly, in the end, are life-changing.” -

Samuel Karns, Advanced Movers Coordinator, Spring Branch ISD
“The Teach Healthier App allows us to share with kids, teachers, educators, administrators, district personnel, community partners… There’s so much that I think is going to be unlocked just with this app, providing the opportunity for everyone to be a game player in what we’re trying to do.” -
Audrey Thompson, Statewide Wellness Coordinator, TxDOT, Austin TX
"In order to change, you have to be united, and it has to be BIG. And so, having so many diverse organizations and people together saying the same thing, that's what can have an impact." -
Coach Katie Morris, Harmony Science Academy, Houston TX
“I teach 5th, 6th and 8th grade, and the Teach Healthier app works for all of them. Sometimes I modify if needed or even let the kids make up their own variations. They really enjoy that! I love that the app is FREE! I really like that you can review a lesson before you decide to teach it, and you can save the ones you like to the favorites section… I would definitely recommend the app to other educators. Even general classroom teachers will love the Energizers and other lessons for in the classroom or during recess time.” -
Mayor Steve Adler, Austin TX
"I'm just getting pumped up for next year, San Antonio. Austin is building a more fit and healthier community! Mayor Taylor, we're coming after that trophy!" -
Mayor Ivy R. Taylor, San Antonio TX
“If you want your community to take home the gold, then you’ll have to go against us in San Antonio! IT’S TIME, TEXAS!” -
Vicki Parsons, Director of the Ballet Austin Butler Center for Dance, Fitness, and Wellness
"We sometimes feel like we're alone when we face different issues in our place of employment, so when you come together, you find people who are like-minded and also have similar likes, concerns, and challenges and you can come up with solutions together when you're able to network and share those problem-solving ideas. IT'S TIME for the 'me' to become 'we' as we join together to make wellness a priority in the state of Texas." -
Jeff Skelton, Mayor's Fitness Council Chair, San Antonio TX
"Sometimes when we get caught up in our own little town or city we think we're the only ones fighting this fight. It's refreshing to meet other folks who are just as passionate and are willing to share best practices. It's humbling when folks ask about what we're doing in San Antonio and how we can help them, which of course we're always willing to do. And we can accelerate our work by learning from others." -
Blair Naylor, Senior Account Manager, Y&R Austin, Austin TX
“At Y&R Austin, we view every project as an opportunity to share our smarts, accomplish the incredible and—most of all—resist the usual. Our research shows that Central Texans know the benefits of living healthier lives but struggle to make the change. It’s a challenge we feel is perfectly aligned to our agency credo, and we’re excited to be a part of this vital mission by participating in the Hack For Health. We worked hard for two weeks developing thoughtful and innovative ideas that will help IT'S TIME TEXAS in their efforts to empower Texans to live happier and healthier lives. We look forward to sharing them!” -
Artie Kamiya, President & Founder, The Great Activities Publishing Company
"How do we go about making dramatic changes in the way teachers help kids to eat well, have better diets, and develop a love for physical activity, develop a different way of looking at their lives versus just doing well academically in school. School is very important, but another important aspect about school (public and private) is how can we help them take care of their bodies for a lifetime. It doesn't happen overnight. So we need dedicated and resourceful teachers and public health advocates to make this happen in schools and families." -
Coach Kendal Riley, Hexter Elementary, Dallas TX
"We are so excited here at Hexter! The project we are working on is a walking/running track for our school. Hexter began fundraising last year, and with the $10,000 from Growing Healthy Schools, it looks like we may have all of the funds by the end of the school year! I cannot believe all of the support we got from friends and family online. I will definitely be spreading the word about this cause." -
Lauren Dimitry, Texans Care For Children, Austin TX
“This is my third year presenting at the Summit, and I leave inspired every time. I love the opportunity to share what I've learned in my years working on state-level policy and meeting so many talented, motivated Texans. Texans Care for Children believes that every child should have access to opportunities to be fit and well-nourished. As IT’S TIME TEXAS rallies and inspires Texans and helps make healthy easier, we stand ready to deliver those messages to Texas lawmakers.” -
James, Student Hack For Health Participant, Austin TX
"Growing up, my dad had a lot of problems with weight. A few years ago he decided to make a change, so my whole family got on board with supporting him and just trying to live healthier, which spilled into my life! Health wasn't something that I was really conscious of growing up. I never really thought about it... but just seeing how much happier and better my dad is now that he's healthier is fantastic. Any organization that empowers people to make those changes in their lives is important and worth my time, and worth supporting." -
Alli Markham, YES! Youth Fitness Instructor, Austin TX
“I love the simplicity and user-friendly interface on the Teach Healthier App. With the revamp of our Homeschool P.E. classes, we will be using the app as homework to earn extra YES! Honeybucks and school credit! Each parent will download the Teach Healthier app, and kids love taking their parents’ phones to play the games!” -
Peter Li, CEO, Atlas Wearables, Austin TX
“Science, tech and Texas are all colliding and taking big roles in the national scope right now. Health is not something separate from our work, success or happiness. Texas can set the example of synthesizing the health and tech industries to make impactful change for a healthier State. Atlas is just the beginning of a future, powered by technology that gives feedback to everyone about their health. The future will be smart systems that put everyone in control of their health. Technology connects people to information while providing support through communities. IT'S TIME TEXAS' Hack For Health is where the next phase will come from. Atlas wants to be a part of pulling this future closer to the present.” -
Carolyn Haney, Founder & CEO, WeViva, Austin TX
“Every day we are motivated by the success stories of our participants. These women (and men) are strong, brave, independent, and choosing to do something for themselves in order to better everyone around them. [Choose Healthier] will make a great resource for people when they need to find a specific class in their neighborhood! We, at WeViva, think that the best thing about the app is the easy navigation, and the fact that all the resources are in the same place so you will no longer have to search multiple sites to find the class that fits your needs!” -
Dr. Dan McCoy, Divisional Senior VP & CO, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Richardson TX
"This type of event is incredibly important because it brings stakeholders from all over the state who have an interest in the healthcare of our communities, allows them to share ideas and to talk about things that work in their individual communities that can be shared and collaborated on around the state. So many times we tend to work in silos. We think we have the greatest idea, but what we really forget about is that collective effort of people working together can actually accomplish something much bigger than we could individually." -
Juliana, 6th Grader & Mayor's Fitness Council Member, San Antonio TX
“Being healthy is one of the most important things that a kid has to be!” -
Hannah Wright, Teach Healthier After School Instructor, Austin TX
“I think what the students take away from the program influences their families, and the larger community is changed by the actions of families. On a personal note, I find myself thinking differently about my own behaviors-are they healthy?-as I see myself as a mentor for young people now!” -
Kim Wilson, Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living, Austin TX
"For folks who are interested in creating healthier places, being surrounded by others who are doing it too and seeing that there really is a movement in this state is very gratifying, and reenergizes us to continue with the work we're doing. IT'S TIME for the healthy choice to be the easy choice in Texas." -
Nick Alfaro, Ricardo TX
“Growing Healthy Schools has given our school an opportunity to make a change. The response we received from our staff, parents, and community was outstanding! Words can’t explain how thankful and proud I am for the awesome turnout we had and the privilege of being chosen as a winner of a H-E-B Health Kit. Thank you!” -
Dr. Lexi Nolen, Vice President for Impact, The Episcopal Health Foundation, Houston TX
"One of the things that I'll be taking home with me is really a heightened sense that this conversation about community health is happening everywhere in communities, and that a lot of what really needs to be done is connecting the dots and building capacity for collaboration, and not necessarily thinking you have to start from the ground up... I think it's time for a community voice. I think it's time for communities to begin to recognize how health affects their lives in everything that they do and to become comfortable with speaking up and saying what they think and beginning to have conversations with people they don't normally have conversations with so that we can begin to solve problems together." -
Danielle Archuleta, IT'S TIME TEXAS Design Intern, Mansfield TX
“My life has been ever-changing. I lived in 13 houses before the age of 20, went to many different schools, had different friends... With each change, my health and activity levels changed as well. My weight went up or down. What I ate and how much I ate would change. I’d be obsessed with working out or I wouldn’t do it at all. I realized I needed a balance and that I needed to make healthy the one thing that I always kept up with. It is not a fad, it is not optional, and I have to be healthy to take on all of the exciting changes in my life.” -
Coach Terri Pitts, Colonial Hills Elementary, San Antonio TX
“I would recommend this program to any school that is in need of money to help make their school a healthier one. Colonial Hills reached out to the community via letters, word of mouth and Facebook to raise the money for our recess equipment. We raised $1,605 and won an H-E-B Bonus Kit!” -
Community Challenge Participant, Alvarado TX
“We’re bringing awareness to the community and uniting as many sectors as we can. Churches are challenging other churches, businesses are encouraging healthier workplace lunches, and schools are teaching kids to be healthy and active!” -
Victoria Trott, Teach Healthier After School Instructor, Austin TX
"Just this week, a whole group of my students saw me munching on something completely unfamiliar to them. I am known for carrying around random things to snack on, and this day it happened to be a bag of arugula. They looked at me very curiously, asking me if I was eating leaves! I could see their faces light up when they talked about the taste and it opened up a discussion for what other leafy greens they enjoy eating. I'm an After School Instructor because I deeply believe in helping our children learn the importance of fitness and nutrition. I feel that it is our responsibility as parents and adults to set our children up to succeed, and physical health is part of that. We provide a different and accessible means of educating the children we work with!" -
Drew Davis, Marketing Director, Blue Honey Yoga, Austin TX
“IT’S TIME TEXAS believes in educating Texans about how easy it is make healthy choices, and that falls right in line with what Blue Honey is all about. Anyone who is making the decision to choose healthier via the Choose Healthier app will be rewarded with promotional deals and discounts just for being proactive in wanting to make a positive change!” -
Kevin Nevels, Owner & Chief Instructor, Taekwondo America, Coppell TX
“It’s been really cool, because Coppell has such a diverse business community... but we’ve never really had a good way to unify them and get them behind a cause. Through Living Well in Coppell and the H-E-B Community Challenge, we’ve been able to get the businesses to come together and really get under one banner and support healthy living and wellness in the city.”
